The State of the Church...

A friend e-mailed me this article, and I thought that it would be a good topic of conversation here.

This is one of the most evident problems:

"Thus sermons become more therapeutic and less instructional; and the validity of what we do on Sunday morning is grounded in what we feel, not in what we think.

Second, many Christian churches have abandoned serious Bible exposition and theological teaching. Burge points out that historical exegesis is becoming a “lost art” in the pulpit."

Of course people are going to be biblically illiterate if the preacher does not preach Biblical passages. Buffet-Style Preaching where the pastor picks and chooses verses to preach on contributes greatly leads to biblical illiteracy. If a pastor were to take the congregation through the whole book of, Esther, for example, I imagine that congregation would have a firm grasp on the major theme of that book, the minor themes of that book, and how it applies to their lives.
